The Jeff Wilcox Memorial returns for the 16th time, which has run in honour of Jeff and his legacy.
It's time to celebrate his life, his legacy and the revival of what was one of the longest running independent Bodyboarding events in Australia.
The Wilcox family and friends have stood by Jeff and this event for many years, giving it a rich diverse history of bodyboarding. We at Forster Tuncurry Bodyboard Association are proud and honoured to have the opportunity to revive this brilliant event.
Jeff Wilcox Memorial 2013 – The importance of this event being revived is for our communities to inspire kids.
It doesn't matter where the youth live, they quite often become distracted and fall by the way side. This event is built around a young mans legacy with pride and passion for youth involved in sport and the community.
Jeff Wilcox Memorial 2013 will see the Wilcox family and the communities getting together again to celebrate Jeff, to help run this event again. FTBA Members, committee and Families are passionate about putting back into the sport they love, and helping rebuild a quality event back in the Great Lakes Community for now and years to come.
It is NOW YOUR TURN to get apart of the revival of this prestigious event, that will be on the annual Great Lakes calendar for years to come. Doddsy believes events such as this enrich the lives of the people that live in the sport and the Great Lakes area, offering the opportunity for new and positive relationships to develop, where they normally may not have the opportunity to do so.The Jeff Wilcox Memorial 2013 Committee's goals for this event is focused around development, education and fair and friendly competition in the bodyboarding community:
Jeff Wilcox was a young man with a bright future. He was a member of the Great Lakes community who was full of life, and bursting with enthusiasm and energy. He was a brilliant sportsman with amazing potential, excelling in bodyboarding and hockey. Sadly, Jeff passed away from a very aggressive cancer aged 14 and left a legacy behind.
Andrew Capilli and Andrew Quirk started a Memorial event in 1990 in honour of Jeff, who looked death in the face and smiled at it. They named it, the Jeff Wilcox Memorial.
Starting as a simple bodyboarding competition, it quickly evolved into one of the most respected and prestigious competitions held in the sport of bodyboarding. From day one this memorial set out to showcase the life and enthusiasm for the water and friendly competition that Jeff had, and it succeeded in abundance. The best riders from all around the world have come to the Great Lakes area to compete in this event in the past and that is why this event still commands the respect it holds today.
Drawing some of the worlds best bodyboarders and talented locals, the event has a renowned respect amongst top performing competitors. Past winners include Ash Murray, Troy De Coque, Ben Holland, Ben Player, Andrew Lester, Damien King, Levi Wagner and Mitch Rawlins to name a few.
